4K IPTV in Europe: Ultra HD Sport and Films with TiviBridge

TiviBridge is a 4K IPTV service for Europe with no Ultra HD surcharge. Alongside 25,000+ live channels, a separate 4K category carries selected sport, film and documentary channels in 3840 × 2160 where a genuine UHD source exists. Every 4K channel has an HD twin next to it, so you can switch down if your connection is busy.

This page explains what is actually produced in 4K, which broadband and devices you need in the five home markets, and how HEVC compression makes it possible. It also explains when 4K is not worth it, because on many screens HD looks almost the same.

What streams in 4K

Only a small part of European television is made in true 4K. Broadcasters need new cameras, production trucks and higher distribution costs, so they save UHD for their most valuable content. In practice, that means three areas.

• Sport: selected top-flight football on pay-TV channels, some Champions League nights, Formula 1 and a few major events that public broadcasters show on dedicated UHD channels.
• Films and series: newer releases in the on-demand library, where the studio master is 4K, and a small set of 4K film channels.
• Documentaries: nature, travel and science titles, which are often shot in 4K because they keep selling for years.

News, talk shows, soaps and most daily programmes on channels such as Das Erste, TVP1, NPO 1 or VTM are produced and broadcast in HD. A stream that claims to be 4K from an HD source is only upscaled. Broadband for 4K in the five markets

Most homes in Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium already have enough speed for 4K. Cable and fibre packages commonly start around 100 Mbit/s and often go far higher. Older DSL lines vary more, so check what your router actually receives rather than the speed on your contract.

A single 4K stream typically needs 15 to 25 Mbit/s. Aim for a steady 25 Mbit/s as a minimum and around 50 Mbit/s if others use the connection at the same time. Our guide to fixing IPTV buffering shows how to test your real speed at the TV.

What you need for 4K

HEVC: why 4K fits down a normal line

A raw 4K picture is far too large to send over home broadband. What makes it work is compression, and for UHD that usually means HEVC, also called H.265. It needs roughly half the data of the older H.264 standard for the same picture quality. The technical specification is published by the International Telecommunication Union.

The catch is that HEVC takes real processing power. Your device must decode it in hardware, not in software. Most 4K televisions and streaming sticks sold since around 2018 can do this. Very old Android boxes, early Fire TV sticks and some budget TVs cannot, and they will stutter or refuse to play 4K channels.

4K TVs and devices that work

Your television is only half the story. The app runs either on the TV itself or on a stick or box plugged into it. Recent Samsung and LG sets run IPTV apps from their own stores, and Android TV sets from Philips, Sony and TCL use Google Play. One limit applies across all five markets. Operator boxes such as MagentaTV, Ziggo, KPN, Telenet, Proximus or Polsat Box are locked to their own service. They cannot run third-party IPTV apps, so plug a stick into a free HDMI port instead.

4K versus HD on IPTV

4K is worth it on a large screen, usually 50 inches or more, watched from a normal sofa distance. There, sport and nature footage look noticeably crisper. On a phone, a tablet or a TV under about 43 inches, HD looks almost identical and uses a quarter of the data.

TiviBridge lists 4K, Full HD and HD versions of the main channels side by side. That lets you choose per channel rather than per plan. Many viewers watch a big match in 4K on the living-room TV and leave the kitchen screen on HD, all within one multi-screen plan.

HDR, 8K and other labels

HDR, or high dynamic range, improves contrast and colour, and some 4K sport and film sources carry it. Whether you see it depends on your TV and device supporting the same HDR format. When they do not, the picture still plays in standard range.

8K is a different matter. Almost nothing is broadcast in 8K in Europe, so any "8K IPTV" offer is upscaling a lower-resolution source. We do not sell an 8K label. We focus on real 4K where it exists and stable HD everywhere else.

Setting up your home network for 4K

Most 4K problems start between the router and the TV, not on the internet line itself. Wi-Fi signals weaken through walls and floors, and neighbours' networks compete for the same channels in apartment blocks. A single network cable from the router to the TV or stick removes most of that risk.

If a cable is not practical, try a powerline adapter or a mesh Wi-Fi point near the TV. Use the 5 GHz band rather than 2.4 GHz where your router offers it. Pause large downloads, cloud backups and game updates on other devices while you watch a 4K match.

How to test 4K before you pay

The simplest check is the 24-hour free trial, which includes the whole 4K category. Open a 4K channel on your main TV in the evening, when home networks are busiest. If it plays for twenty minutes without buffering, your setup is ready. If not, try a network cable, then the HD version, and ask support on WhatsApp for help.
